Is your Resume Crisis Proof?

The economy is under a cross fire and mistakably so, employers are having to release "good workers," as a result of the decline in profits.  Most times, right sizing comes as a surprise.  Will you be ready for the surprise of a lifetime!
Dust that old resume off and let's get started.  Okay - you'll need to gather all of your accomplishments from old performance reviews, MBO/PBO objective documents, etc and enumerate those accomplishments using numbers (percentages, dollars) throughout your resume.  Once you've completed this task, you'll need to understand the accomplishments as it relates to the company you're considering.  Keep a pad handy throughout your career along with clear protector sheets to capture accomplishments/your participation on major projects!  The process of updating your resume will be much easier when reviewing work product samples.

Remember, your success is YOUR priority!!  Best of luck to you.

The FBI and You.....

FBI
The FBI was in attendance at this month's chapter meeting.  Several career opportunities await those who are interested - from careers as an agent to the opportunities to serve in a professional capacity.  The benefits of service to this government agency include the opportunity to travel and chart your own career path!

Here's what you should know:

  • To be an agent minimum requirements include:
  1. A college degree
  2. 3 years full-time work experience (must be in the same field as your degree)
  3. You must be no less than 23 and no more than 36 years old
  • Not all job titles/descriptions will be obvious so always look at the skill-set posted
  • Fine tune your resume to fit the description
  • Provide examples of the types of projects you've completed, dates for job-related certifications and tests
  • The application process can take anywhere from 6 - 18 months depending on how far you get in the interview process and how long it takes to complete the agency's background check
  • ..........Don't use bullets

Visit www.usajobs.gov for more information.  Good luck!

Congratulations are in order!......

The Power of Speed Networking

With so many things going on in our daily routine, it's rare that we
have time to genuinely engage with our peers. So often we know someone by face and title, but not much else. That's why the chapter board members made it a point to facilitate the speed networking event held April 24th at Round One.

At our recent event, individual backgrounds varied from recent grad school graduate- to senior management - to entrepreneurs in the local area. The participants exchanged viewpoints on topics ranging from the presidential election to advice they would give a teenager on entering corporate America. As you can imagine, there was plenty of conversation!

We would like to thank all of the individuals who were able to attend. For those who could not, don't worry, we will be having a similar event in the near future. We look forward to you getting to know your colleagues beyond their business cards.

Entrepreneur Spotlight
This month we turn the spotlight on Jonathan D. Nyaku, CPA - owner and operator of Delali's Kitchen and Elican Travel and Tours for a little business savvy....

MNBMBAA:  How did you make the decision to go from being an accountant to operating a catering business and a travel agency?

JN:  I am still a certified public accountant and continue practicing as such. My travels as an accountant led me to realize the lack of great African food and high-end African themed restaurants in the international marketplace. That led me to come up with the idea of catering as a precursor to establishing a high-end African-themed continental restaurant. With regards to the travel agency, there appears to be a lot of folks that are interested in going to Africa but do not take the first step because the press is bad and information is scarce. This is an attempt to get the good messages out there and get folks to experience the spiritual and cultural, business and investment and rest and relaxation that Africa offers.

MNBMBAA:  What is unique about your businesses that allows you to be successful?
JN:  Customer service is our number one focus. Also, knowing the lay of the land in a place as exotic as Africa helps provide some intangibles that others do not have. The fact that we are introducing great things about Africa to this marketplace also places us in a different category.

MNBMBAA:  Summer is here and people are looking to travel more.  What sorts of options can you offer for the person who doesn't feel comfortable splurging on their dream vacation right now but wants to get away and do something out of the ordinary?

JN:  Package options that are tailored to the pockets of the customers. For instance there is a spiritual and cultural package that soothes the soul and seeks to also engender pride about Africa and in those with African roots. This option is open to the broad market as well, but is primarily designed for African-Americans who wish to undertake a journey, comfortable about what they are going to see and very well informed in the process. We also have a business and investment package which is programmatic and designed to result in real business and not a lot of talk and no action. Finally, there is a rest and relaxation package aimed at those who just want to take off into a different environment to have some peace and commune with nature. Naturally, the emphasis is on making sure that all packages are comfortable and folks' expectations are exceeded.
